Scríobh Leabhar Winners 2020

Pupils in our Senior Room were busy designing and writing Irish books for the Scríobh Leabhar Competition. Congratulations to everybody who took part and created wonderful books. The two winning groups are:

Katie Smith, Siobhán Maddden and David Cox for their story “Fíor Scéal : Na Trí Mhuc agus Mac Tíre Cneasta.

Leah Trimble, Sophie Cox and Áine Madden for their story “Ruaille Buaille ar an bhfeirm”

Both groups will attend a prize giving ceremony in Carrick Education Centre on Tuesday, 10th March.

Swimming Lessons

All pupils are currently attending a seven week session of swimming lessons in Roscommon Leisure Centre.

Pancake Tuesday in Ballagh

It was a happy Tuesday in Ballagh NS as everybody tucked into Crépes hand-decorated with delicious treats, by 5th and 6th class pupils.

Drama Festival Essay Competition

Big congratulations must go to Emily Ryan who was a winner in the Roscommon Drama Festival Essay Competition. Emily will attend a prize giving ceremony tonight in Aras an Chontae. Well done Emily!!

Making Musical Instruments

The subjects of Science, Music and Art were all incorporated in a recent project undertaken by the pupils of Ballagh NS when they designed and made musical instruments using recycled materials. Confirmation Retreat in Knock

In preparation for their Confirmation, the pupils of Ballagh NS attended a retreat in Knock today.

Christmas Cheer

Christmas came early to Ballagh NS. On the day of the holidays, Pupils all came to school dressed in their festive gear. The Parent’s Association held a Christmas Raffle and there were a huge selection of prizes to be won. There was also a sellers prize of a beautiful fun filled hamper. Many thanks to our Parent’s Association for organising this raffle, to all our pupils who worked so hard selling tickets and to everybody who supported it. Congratulations to all the prize winners.

Halloween in Ballagh NS

The Halloween break got off to scary but exciting start in Ballagh NS, as the school was filled with all types of witches, skeletons and scary monsters.

World Book Day

World Book Day was a great success at Ballagh NS with all classes taking part.   We were delighted to meet such a great variety of characters!

Ballagh NS learns all about The Irish Potato Famine

The pupils from Third to Sixth class has compiled fantastic projects on the theme of the Gorta Mó or The Irish Potato Famine.  They worked in groups to research online their projects in depth.  They integrated their work across the curriculum including making Art modals of Strokestown House, a labourer’s cottage, lazy beds, a landlord’s house and a famine ship replica.  They are busy learning famine ballads “The Fields of Athenry” and “Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears”.  The following are the project titles presented:

Group 1. Anthony & Ruairi – Strokestown House and the Irish Famine

Group 2. Michéal, James & Anna – The effects of the famine on Kilgefin Parish

Group 3. Jasmine & Emma – Evictions, Blight and the role of the Landlord in 1840’s & 1850’s Ireland

Group 4. Niamh, Jacob & Rebecca – Effects of the famine – population, emigration & coffin ships

Group 5. David, Emily & Tristan – The functions of workhouse & soup kitchens.

Group 6. Áine, Ava & Sophie – Dwelling types during the famine years
